Why I'm Really Glad the Clintons Didn't Campaign Against Lieberman

Tue Nov 07, 2006 at 11:54:52 PM PDT

Here's why: I don't like Lieberman very much. And I don't trust him very much either.

It looks like we have a real chance of taking the Senate. If the Democratic party had really alienated Lieberman, I still think he would have won CT. And if that happened, our chances of controlling the Senate would hinge on Lieberman's decision to caucus with Democrats. And I guarantee the Republicans would make him some attractive offers. I'm sure they will if Talent and Webb win. But as it stands, the Clintons and Gore, both of whom have such long working relationships with Lieberman, can pretty much call any decision of Lieberman's not to caucus with Democrats flat-out betrayal. Lieberman isn't an evil guy, and, because the Democrats didn't go balls-to-the-wall against him in CT, I don't think he can extort the party in good conscience now.

So I actually feel kind of relieved. Feel free to tell me why I'm wrong. I always enjoying getting a new perspective on things.

Daily Kos Cracks 1,000,000 Visits Today!

Mon Nov 06, 2006 at 10:20:18 PM PDT

Has this happened before on a non-election day? The site counter just crossed the 1,000,000-visit mark. Think about that: 1,000,000 visitors and it's not even November 7th.

The counter is here.

Powell on Cheney, Rummy, Wolfy: "Fucking Crazies"

Tue Nov 16, 2004 at 10:48:01 PM PDT

I got a good laugh at this, though it ultimately left me with a feeling of sadness, frustration, and betrayal directed toward Powell. From Nicholas Kristof's op-ed piece tomorrow:
In a conversation with the British foreign secretary, Jack Straw, Mr. Powell once referred in frustration to Mr. Cheney, Don Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz as "[expletive] crazies," according to a recent British biography of Tony Blair. Mr. Powell had a point, but they're getting the last laugh.
Powell might have been wrong about WMD, but he's right about this.

A Sad Veteran's Day Inspirational

Wed Nov 10, 2004 at 11:21:25 PM PDT

Today, the New York Times Op-Ed contains some excerpts from letters that soldiers killed in the Iraq war have written home before they were killed. It's called "The Things They Wrote," a reference to Tim O'Brien's book about the Vietnam War, The Things They Carried. It is at once touching and terrible. I have included an excerpt below the fold.

Ashcroft Resigns

Tue Nov 09, 2004 at 02:56:01 PM PDT

According to the "News Alert" on NYTimes.com:
Attorney General John Ashcroft and Commerce Secretary Don Evans Have Resigned  (5:51 PM ET)

This was rumored before, but who's going to replace him? Might we get a more moderate voice, or are we going to have someone with an even worse history of racism and less respect for general human rights? God, I hope things don't get worse.

Military Tribunals at Guatanamo Ruled Unconstitutional

Mon Nov 08, 2004 at 07:55:15 PM PDT

From the New York Times article. Excerpt below the fold.
GUANTÁNAMO BAY, Cuba, Nov. 8 - A federal judge ruled Monday that President Bush had both overstepped his constitutional bounds and improperly brushed aside the Geneva Conventions in establishing military commissions to try detainees at the United States naval base here as war criminals.

The ruling by Judge James Robertson of United States District Court in Washington brought an abrupt halt to the trial here of one detainee, one of hundreds being held at Guantánamo as enemy combatants. It threw into doubt the future of the first set of United States military commission trials since the end of World War II as well as other legal proceedings devised by the administration to deal with suspected terrorists.

One Picture Sums Up 2004-2008

Sun Nov 07, 2004 at 02:27:51 PM PDT

The Nation's cover this week is both poetic and so very appropriate. It doesn't attack people who voted for Bush; it doesn't ask how America "can be so stupid;" it doesn't discuss any specific issues. Rather, it visually presents the dark future that awaits our nation as long as George Bush is guaranteed to be our commander in chief.

That sums up my feelings more concisely than any words can.

The Beginnings of a Plan for the Democratic Party

Fri Nov 05, 2004 at 06:18:50 PM PDT

Ok, people, we need to get our message straight and develop new strategies. And we have to do it fast. We have been in much worse shape. Even though we got hurt this election, we still have a 45 senators, over 200 Representatives, the newly recovered Big Dog, the almost-as-charming John Edwards, Barack Obama, Howard Dean, and of course John Kerry, who still be representin' Massachusetts. And now, we have some new help. We've got Al Franken, a fiscally solvent Air America, MoveOn.org, America Coming Together, Media Matters, George Soros, and the blogosphere, including, of course, DailyKos. We have Al Sharpton who has moved away from anti-Semitism and is now becoming an earnest and powerful voice for the disenfranchised. We also now have a technique for populist fundraising that has allowed us to match Republicans dollar for dollar in a presidential race. That is good news.

This Really Cheered Me Up

Wed Nov 03, 2004 at 10:11:56 PM PDT

I was working out today, trying to get back on schedule, hoping it would make me feel a bit better (it did), and my iPod randomly selected He Got Game by Public Enemy. It is freakishly applicable to this past campaign.

It's best if you can actually listen to the song, but here are the lyrics that really touched me:

The Red States Are Self-Destructing!

Wed Nov 03, 2004 at 02:25:48 PM PDT

This is certainly not news, but I just can't believe it. I have to take the time to read the entirety of What's the Matter With Kansas. Here's a chart I made, comparing per capita income with the Presidential vote this election:

I used C-Span's electoral map, along with list of per-capita income per state.

Again, this is not news, but it is pretty mind-boggling. Commentary is below the fold.

Why I'm Not Mad at Kerry

Tue Nov 02, 2004 at 10:38:29 PM PDT

I've been thinking about this for a while, and whether Kerry wins or loses, I can't blame him for his campaign. Sure there were some stupid quotes, and his position on Iraq (most specifically, insisting he would have voted to give Bush the authority to go to war even knowing there were no WMD) didn't always make sense, but I think he ran he gave it his all and proved to us during the debates that he would make an excellent President. This was no Gore campaign; he did the right stuff.

Unfortunately, that leaves me with only one option: to be disappointed in my fellow Americans. And I am.

This is exactly why I was afraid of this election going to Bush. I've been happy with the way Kerry's been campaigning, and when he faces flak for something, it's usually a ridiculous reaction on the part of the media, not his own fault (see SBVFT). It's the process--mendacious campaign ads and a complacement media, and the people, who have given Bush victory. I hate to think about the implications of this.

Yes! Florida Counts DO NOT Include Early Votes! (PROOF!)

Tue Nov 02, 2004 at 06:49:04 PM PDT

If you look here you can see a number of counties that allowed early voting. Note that a number of those counties are listed as having 0% of their precincts counted. We can conclude then that the results being reported by Florida right now do not include early voters.

Recall that polls show that approximately 1/3 of registered Floridians have already voted, and early voters favored Kerry approximately 51 to 43. That gives Kerry a big cushion even though the current Florida results are tilting Bush.

Some premature calculations: (Kerry's Early Voting Lead) x (30% of registered voters) - (Bush's Current Lead) x (50% of precincts reporting) = 2.4 - 2.25 = 0.15 = Kerry is actually leading!

Oh yeah, and Miami-Dade has not reported at all, but Duval is 85% done!

Florida is going blue, goddamnit!

HELP: Early Voters Counted in Florida?

Tue Nov 02, 2004 at 06:28:59 PM PDT

Anyone have the definitive word on this? I want to know if the Florida county results right now are including the overwhelming Democratic early voter results. It's true we haven't gotten anything from Palm Beach or Miami-Dade yet, but even Broward is coming in more favorable for Bush than in 2000 (even though its turnout is way up). This could all be easily explained if these results do not include the early voter results from the past week or two. So, anyone know for sure?

November 2nd, in Pictures

Tue Nov 02, 2004 at 12:36:08 PM PDT

  1. Showed up at Kerry/Edwards HQ for grouping
  2. Got my literature and instructions
  3. GOTV!!!!!!!!
  4. Voted

It was great to see all the enthusiastic, mostly older volunteers at Kerry/Edwards HQ. We encountered very few Bush supporters in our GOTV efforts as well. And it's only 2:30! We've got a big GOTV sweep scheduled for 5 on campus where we'll be knocking on every single dorm door.

So far, my day was good. How was yours?

My 55-year-old Dad, A Fist-Time Voter

Mon Nov 01, 2004 at 05:22:06 PM PDT

It's 2002.

I'm 18 years old. My 53-year-old father has not voted once in his life. He believes that the system is so corrupt and bloated that it's not worth voting at all. I try to protest, to tell him that to not vote is to tell all the elected officials that they can screw you whenever they want and you won't fight back. He doesn't agree, and he inexplicably thinks that not voting is somehow going to force them to reform the system once they realize how little interest the public has in it. I try to argue him into voting for a third party candidate advocating election reform. He thinks that is still participating in in the broken system.

BREAKING: PICTURES of the Explosives in Al Qaqaa (Troops were There!)

Thu Oct 28, 2004 at 11:06:39 AM PDT

This one via Josh Marshall and Talking Points Memo. Not only does a new report by ABC's 5 Eyewitness News reveal that the reporters saw exlposives, but they have pictures!

Bush has been claiming that the explosives may have been gone before troops got there and that it is inappropriate to say otherwise because it is an ongoing investigation. What do you say to these pictures, Mr. President?

Bush Declares Himself Unfit for the Presidency!

Wed Oct 27, 2004 at 08:52:36 PM PDT

Bush speaking about Kerry, from an article today in the New York Times:
This investigation is important and it's ongoing, and a political candidate who jumps to conclusions without knowing the facts is not a person you want as your commander in chief.

Oh, the irony is so rich!

BushCheney04.com Hacked?!

Sat Oct 23, 2004 at 01:05:24 PM PDT

I don't know what happened, or if this is normal, but the URL "bushcheney04.com" is now forwarding to georgewbush.org, a satirical anti-Bush website. I could have sworn I'd accessed Bush's webiste (georgewbush.com) through bushcheney04.com before...

Can anyone enlighten me?
