I just wanted to let everyone know about UpstartTV, our new scoop powered web community.  Our goal is to use the democratic nature of scoop to give independent writers, actors, and producers the same opportunity to thrive that sites like Dailykos, MyDD and Booman Tribune have given to bloggers.

Miers ought to make you smile!!

I'll preface this by saying that this argument may have been made before.  If so let me know and I'll delete - no hard feelings.  Otherwise, thanks for reading.

This is a gift horse win-win for us.  Reid has put us in the position of hopeful optimism, which is great.  Now the Republicans will be the ones whispering about the filibuster.  And they will be the ones to insist that their direct questions be answered.  We can join them and make a good old bi-partisan precedent out of it.  At least we have dumb luck.

We need to rebuild New Orleans

Sun Sep 18, 2005 at 07:05:33 AM PDT

I want to rebuild you New Orleans.  I want to take a week off from my job and drive thirty hours to sleep on the floor and work twelve-hour days.  I'll pay my own way - I don't have much but I'll find the money.  I need to show you that America isn't the country it seems to be.  I need to recommit to the American Dream.

Change your blue star to gold - Inspired by Cindy

Wed Aug 17, 2005 at 10:04:10 AM PDT

When I first learned about Cindy Sheehan and Gold Star Families for Peace, I was reminded of a song I hadn't thought about for a long time.  The song was Sullivan by Caroline's Spine.  It tells the story of the five Sullivan brothers, who served together on the same ship in WWII, though their mothers eyes.  All five brothers will killed in action on November 13th, 1942.

After being reminded, it took me a few days to listen to the it.  For those who don't know it, it's a non-political and painfully saddening track. Today, when I did listen to it again, it did for me what Cindy is doing to the whole Iraq debate - it changed my perspective away from numbers and deadlines and back to the cruel human cost of war.

On Anti-Oppression - For the Sake of Community

Tue Aug 09, 2005 at 02:18:00 PM PDT

I have been thinking about this for a long time now, and I'll  be the first to say I haven't figured it out yet, but with the current storm over NARAL going down, I think this is the time to put it out there.

So how many of us have taken an Anti-Oppression Training?  Or have even hear the term.  It's the equivalent of an Anti-Racism training, but it focuses on men and women instead of members of different races.  I took my first class after a campus progressive group I was a part of Exploded one day, out of the blue, over sexism.  We weren't perfect, but we were a bunch of liberal guys with a few liberal women, working like crazy to make any change we could.  I thought that was enough.  I though being a good person, and being a thinking liberal would keep me from oppressing the women around me.  Republicans did that, not me.

Kos, Myspace, and Building Our Own

I know the average age of a Kossack is a bit higher then the average age of a Myspace user, but for people who are interested in online community's, Myspace cannot be ignored.

Democrats: Doing the People's Business (the new Motto)? w/ Poll

Tue May 24, 2005 at 09:21:11 AM PDT

So did anyone else (of course you did, I'm certainly not the only C-SPAN junkie around) notice Democratic Senators repeating the words "The People's Business" over the last few days of debate?
Reid said it last night after the agreement was announced.
Sounds like sweet music to these ears.  Should we start printing "doing the People's Business" shirts and buttons now?

Senate Republicans want out of Bush's Social Security Plan

Fri Apr 08, 2005 at 11:46:02 AM PDT

David Espo, an AP Special Correspondent, reported
 today that
Senate Republicans are considering temporarily sidetracking President Bush's plan for personal investment accounts under Social Security, hoping Democrats will then join compromise talks on legislation to restore the program's solvency.

and...

Several GOP officials said Thursday that Republican leaders discussed the possibility privately this week, recognizing that unified Democratic opposition to the accounts has so far stalled efforts to advance the president's top domestic priority.

Awesome.
