Let's remember DKos members who have left to the great beyond
Mon May 26, 2008 at 12:31:03 PM PDT
Thanks to shock for the inspiration
With today being Memorial Day across America, most eyes are focused on the ultimate sacrifice that soldiers have given in defense of the USA.
However, I think it is reasonable that we at DKos also take the time to remember those members of our community who have left us either in the last year or previous.
Jazz legend Oscar Peterson dies at age 82
Mon Dec 24, 2007 at 10:57:15 AM PDT
I opened my email today and found an alert from the CBC stating that this true piano playing genius has left this earth to go join that incredible jam session in the sky.
http://www.cbc.ca/...
For those of you unfamiliar with jazz, Oscar was one of the legends of jazz piano. He was born in Montreal and went on to play the world. He was a performer in the Jazz at the Philharmonic sessions and concerts (which had to cancel shows in the 40s and 50s rather than play in front of a segregated audience)
Hey Chertoff! You've already trashed your constitution. Keep your hands off of ours!

So after a long day contributing to the Canadian economic engine, I read an article tonight that caught my eye in the Toronto Star.
Peace Bridge talks end
http://www.thestar.com/...
I thought it was something about the prospective new span across the Niagara River to take the load off of the existing 3-lane Peace Bridge - and how it's gone back to the drawing board again.
But then I saw the sub-title
'Canada objects to U.S. plans to fingerprint travellers'
WTF?

Steven Harper's flights - ripping off Canadian taxpayers?
Thu Mar 01, 2007 at 07:22:56 AM PDT
Remember how Steven Harper ripped into the Liberals "$11,000-per-hour Challenger jet flights" when he was leader of the opposition?
Well he's now trying to convince Canadian taxpayers it's not that expensive.
But in doing so, he's massively ripping off Canadian taxpayers.

Action Item - Condoleezza Rice in Halifax, NS on Monday for 9/11 functions
Fri Sep 08, 2006 at 05:05:08 PM PDT
The CBC is reporting that Condoleeza Rice is going to spend 9/11 in Nova Scotia.
From the CBC:
After attending memorial functions in Washington, Rice is expected to attend an event at the Halifax International Airport on Monday and spend Tuesday in MacKay's home riding of Pictou County.
Now Ms. Rice, it's nice of you to come up here and thank us for keeping your citizens, but you sullied the respect since then. We know you're going to politicize this (and so will MacKay) - so let's call a spade a spade.

Dennis Hastert Doesn't Think NO Should be Rebuilt
Thu Sep 01, 2005 at 01:18:45 PM PDT
I wa looking at nola.com, and
this jumped out at me:
House Speaker: Rebuilding N.O. doesn't make sense
WASHINGTON - House Speaker Dennis Hastert dropped a bombshell on flood-ravaged New Orleans on Thursday by suggesting that it isn’t sensible to rebuild the city.
"It doesn't make sense to me," Hastert told the Daily Herald in suburban Chicago in editions published today. "And it's a question that certainly we should ask."
Toronto DKos meetup?
Fri Jul 15, 2005 at 10:59:58 AM PDT
Hello Kossacks out there in the Toronto area.
Is the thought of hockey cooling you off in this heatwave?
Is the turd blossom schadenfreude filling your day with pure Canuck hoser happiness?
Are you an American expat who's looking for a progressive friendly crowd?
Are you looking for an excuse to sample some fine cold Canadian potent potables to escape the heat?
May I suggest a DKos meet up in Toronto.

Leaked 10 Downing Street Dossier - London Bombers Homegrown?
Sat Jul 09, 2005 at 06:55:14 PM PDT
We're all familiar with the leaked minutes from that infamous pre-Iraq war meeting.
Now in the July 10th Sunday Times there is another leaked dossier - codenamed Operation Contest - discussing the British connections with Al-Qaeda.
Leaked No 10 dossier reveals Al-Qaeda's British recruits
AL-QAEDA is secretly recruiting affluent, middle-class Muslims in British universities and colleges to carry out terrorist attacks in this country, leaked Whitehall documents reveal.
A network of "extremist recruiters" is circulating on campuses targeting people with "technical and professional qualifications", particularly engineering and IT degrees.
This could lead to explain why the bombing occured in middle class Muslim neighborhoods (i.e. Edgware Road) and could corroborate the thought that the attackers were homegrown in the UK.
The dossier was ordered by Tony Blair after the bombing occured in Madrid.

Robert Fisk - The reality of this barbaric bombing
Fri Jul 08, 2005 at 04:33:17 AM PDT
As a long-term veteran of the Middle East, Robert Fisk has seen war up close like few other journalists globally.
Today he has penned his thoughts about yesterday's attacks in London. Essentially - it is foolish to think that insurgents will remain in the Mideast and retaliation was to be expected.
The reality of this barbaric bombing
If we are fighting insurgency in Iraq, what makes us think insurgency won't come to us?
"If you bomb our cities," Osama bin Laden said in one of his recent video tapes, "we will bomb yours." There you go, as they say. It was crystal clear Britain would be a target ever since Tony Blair decided to join George Bush's "war on terror" and his invasion of Iraq. We had, as they say, been warned. The G8 summit was obviously chosen, well in advance, as Attack Day.

U.S. air strike kills seven Afghans, including child
Sat Apr 30, 2005 at 09:53:22 PM PDT
Remember Afghanistan - you know that war to find Usama Bin Laden?
I just found this in the Toronto Star which shows the success of the US bombing its way to the hearts and minds of the local population.
KABUL -- An air strike on a suspected insurgent camp in central Afghanistan killed three civilians and four militants, the U.S. military said today.
All seven died when warplanes attacked the camp in Uruzgan province on Friday, a military statement said.
"The attack killed one Afghan woman, one Afghan man and a child," the statement said. Two more children were wounded and taken to the U.S. base in the southern city of Kandahar for treatment, it said.
The military didn't say whether U.S. planes carried out the attack or give details of the victims. A spokeswoman had no further details.
Jeb Bush - US Representative at Pope's Inaugural Mass!!
Sat Apr 23, 2005 at 12:13:57 PM PDT
I was reading the
following article from the CBC on the Pope's first media address. The lede was something I had already heard this morning with breakfast. All was as I already knew it - I thought...
But then I read through the article - and got to the bottom:
The inaugural mass in St. Peter's Square on Sunday is expected to draw 500,000 people and a host of dignitaries, including Gov. Gen. Adrienne Clarkson from Canada.
Prince Philip will be representing the Queen. Other leaders present will include German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder; Prince Albert of Monaco; and Florida Gov. Jeb [John] Bush, representing the United States.

Rolling Stone rejects Bible ads, The Onion will run them
Tue Jan 18, 2005 at 10:22:59 AM PDT
Story from the USA Today
here.
The world of religion is fighting for that elusive target audience.
The nation's largest Bible publisher, rolling out its biggest marketing campaign ever to promote a new translation aimed at "spiritually intrigued 18- to 34-year-olds,"
Although the Bible in focus is a new version, as a secularist I'm hoping that other religions would be given equal play or everyone gets none at all.

Update [2005-1-18 14:9:32 by Thor Heyerdahl]: Removed the line about kowtowing. Although this annoys me as a secularist, one has to follow the final dollar I suppose. Moved structure a bit.
Guantanamo Britons and Australians free in weeks
Tue Jan 11, 2005 at 07:50:18 AM PDT
Looks like the coalition of the billing got a bit of heat taken off of them by George W.
From the BBC
All four Britons held by the US in Guantanamo Bay will be returned to the UK within weeks, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw told the Commons on Tuesday.
Moazzam Begg, from Birmingham, and Martin Mubanga, Richard Belmar and Feroz Abbasi, from London, have been held by the US for almost three years.
They were detained in the Cuban camp as part of the US-led "war on terror".
Mr Straw said the US had agreed to release the four after "intensive and complex discussions" over security.
He said the government had been negotiating the return of the detainees since 2003...
...Egyptian-born Mamdouh Habib, 48, from Sydney, had been held in Cuba for three years after being captured near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, but will be released without charge.
