Cruise Ship or Nursing Home?

Thu Sep 01, 2005 at 01:09:42 PM PDT

I received this in my email today:

About two years ago my wife and I were on a cruise through the western Mediterranean aboard a Princess liner.  At dinner we noticed an elderly lady sitting alone along the rail of the grand stairway in the main dining room.  I noticed that all the staff, ship officers, waiters, busboys, etc. all seemed very familiar with this lady.  I asked our waiter who the lady was, expecting to be told she owned the line, but he said he only knew that she had been on board for the last four cruises, back to back.

As we left the dining room one evening, I caught her eye and stopped to say hello. We chatted and I said, "I understand you've been on this ship for the last four cruises."  She replied, "Yes, that's true."  I stated, "I don't understand" and she replied without a pause, "It's cheaper than a nursing home."

Brian Schweitzer hearts Howard Dean

In case you missed it, Air America's Politically Direct had a great interview with Governor Brian Schweitzer on Father's Day. You can download the archive here:

This guy is the real deal. He may be in a red state, but he's not afraid to stick his neck out for Howard Dean:

Do you ever get the feeling MoveOn.org bats for the other team?

Thu May 19, 2005 at 02:23:30 PM PDT

I'm about ready to get off the MoveOn.org mailing list. The "Senate Wars" ad based upon the Star Wars theme is a complete joke. Looking back, the best ads put out by MoveOn.org were created by the members, not the people who run the organization. The Bush in 30 Seconds contest was GREAT. Remember the "Child's Play" ad?

Jeff Gannon to Appear on Bill Maher Tonight

Fri Apr 29, 2005 at 06:25:26 PM PDT

Jeff Gannon Appears on Bill Maher

Jeff Gannon on Bill Maher tonight! This should be interesting.

James D. Guckert, aka Jeff Gannon, has proved his critics wrong on at least one count: His 15 minutes of fame just won't expire.

Need more proof? He's set to appear on Bill Maher's live HBO show tonight at 11 p.m. EDT, along with Sen. Charles Schumer, Martin Short, and others. On his Web site today, Gannon announces: "I'll go one on one with [Maher]. ... We're going to talk about politics, last night's presidential press conference, and probably some other stuff."

I'm hoping Maher grills him on the Secret Service logs. What was he doing at the White House on days with no scheduled press briefings? I can't believe Gannon's going on the air after all of Maher's "boyfriend in the White House" jokes.

Don't look for Bill Maher to be too cozy with Gannon. In one show this year, Maher commented on Gannon's past, saying, "Now I know what Bush meant when he said he had a man date."

The fun starts at 11 p.m. Eastern on HBO.

Toby Keith Receives Award from FBI

Wed Apr 20, 2005 at 05:00:20 PM PDT

Toby Keith Gets Special Commendation From The F.B.I.

This is disgusting. Our own FBI honors a country music hick whose lyrics treat bombing innocent civilians as some joke.

Special agents from the Nashville and Memphis bureaus of the F.B.I. were backstage at the CMT Music Awards last week looking for Toby Keith. Fortunately for the superstar, they were tracking him down to present him with the Exceptional Service In The Public Interest commendation, which was signed by F.B.I. Director Robert S. Mueller.

The honor was bestowed on Keith by Assistant Special Agent In Charge Randy Thysse, who noted Keith's patriotism and service to the armed forces through his USO trips to Iraq and other overseas locations.

Easter is a Pagan Holiday

Sun Mar 27, 2005 at 12:42:20 PM PDT

Ask a right-wing Christian where the word Easter comes from, or why the holiday is associated with bunnies and eggs, and they probably won't give you a straight answer. The truth is that Easter has Pagan origins.

"Easter" is derived from "Eastre," the Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility. The eggs and bunnies are symbols of fertility and have nothing to do with Jesus.

The tradition is so deeply instilled in our minds that very few people question it. When I was a kid, we brought our Easter eggs and candies to the Catholic mass and carried them to the front of the church so the priest could bless them. Nobody thought for a second the meaning behind the eggs and bunnies. The fertility symbol is quite ironic, considering the Catholic church doesn't even believe in birth control.

Republican Precinct Captain Creates "Fox Blocker"

Sat Mar 26, 2005 at 08:55:01 AM PDT

A former Republican precinct man has created a device that screws into the back of TV sets to block Fox News.

Man Sells Device That Blocks Fox News

The creator of the "Fox Blocker" contends the channel is not news at all. Kimery figures he's sold about 100 of the little silver bits of metal that screw into the back of most televisions, allowing people to filter Fox News from their sets, since its August debut.

The Tulsa, Okla., resident also has received thousands of e-mails, both angry and complimentary -- as well as a few death threats.

Death threats for making a TV device? It doesn't surprise me, considering the wingnuts who put a bounty on Michael Schiavo's head.

True or False - Should the US honor the Native American culture?

Fri Mar 18, 2005 at 06:57:21 PM PDT

I just took a test for my pud Outdoor Recreation class at my local college. One of the true or false questions hit me out of nowhere:

No matter how the United States would like to look at the History of the Native American, a great injustice has been served. The US should provide the means for this culture to be exalted and maintained for all future generations of Native Americans and Americans alike.

I answered true and received an incorrect answer.

I couldn't find anything in our book that even resembled this subject. There's only two pages in the whole book that cover the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Native American lands.

Am I paranoid, or is my professor quizzing me over his personal opinion? Thanks.

RocketSpeech.com - Free Domain Name

Tue Mar 15, 2005 at 07:25:01 PM PDT

I'm giving away RocketSpeech.com to the Kossack who has the best idea for the domain. I picked the domain up from pool.com as it expired almost a year ago because I thought it had a nice grassroots sound, but I don't know what to do with it. So if you have a good idea, just put it in the comments section and the domain is yours free of charge.

Bill Frist - Flip Flopper?

Fri Mar 04, 2005 at 07:57:29 AM PDT

Bill Frist Flip Flops

Looks like the cat killer and presidential wannabe in 2008 can't hold up to party pressure after speaking on his own accord last week.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who angered some fellow Republicans this week by suggesting President Bush's proposed Social Security revisions might have to wait a year, said yesterday that the legislation needs to pass this year.

"We need to do it this year -- not next year, but this year," Frist (R-Tenn.) said on the Senate floor, moments after the day's session began. He also restated his support for private accounts that would allow a portion of a younger worker's Social Security contributions to be invested in stocks and to follow the worker into retirement.

Flippity flop. Flippity flop. Waffle. Waffle.

Iran Talking Trash, Warns They Will Smash U.S. Heads with Mallets

Wed Jan 26, 2005 at 07:21:05 PM PDT

Iran: U.S. Tops List for Threatening World Peace

President Mohammad Khatami speaking to reporters after a meeting with Afghanistan:

"We say that America is at the top of the list of countries which are endangering world peace and security and we hope that one day they come to their senses," he said, adding he thought a change in U.S. policy was very unlikely.

Iranian officials have been quick to stress that Tehran would respond vigorously to any military attack by the United States or Israel, which Cheney said may decide to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities.

"The cost of attacking Iran is not something that the world can ever bear and a war against Iran will not remain within our borders," Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr, deputy head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, was quoted as saying by the ISNA students news agency.

"If America wants to invade Islamic Iran it must know that there is no limit to our defense and we have the capability to smash their heads, as with a mallet, wherever we wish," he said.

Valid Washington Votes Won't Count

Wash. Court Rejects Dems Recount Lawsuit

So much for Democracy...

The state Supreme Court on Tuesday unanimously rejected the Democratic Party's request that previously rejected absentee and provisional ballots be included in the hand recount of the governor's race.

In a brief written opinion, the high court said that under Washington law, "ballots are to be 'retabulated' only if they have been previously counted or tallied" -- excluding those that had been disqualified by canvassing boards.

Republican lawyers fought hard against valid votes being counted. They argue that a recount consists of "re-tabulating the valid ballots," not introducing previously uncounted, but completely valid ballots. They'll piss all over democracy to milk more power:

Clinton / Obama 2008

Thu Nov 04, 2004 at 12:42:27 PM PDT

I've heard a lot of talk about how Hillary Clinton is not the answer. At first glance, a liberal senator from New York puts us in the same predicament with southern states. They may not vote for Hillary, but if Clinton is healthy, they will cast votes to send the Big Dog back to the White House. Bill Clinton will campaign all over the south and cause massive headaches for Republicans.

This is the party of minorities, and we need to stop running privileged white boys on our ticket. Vice presidential candidate Barack Obama would drive the minority vote in droves. According to census.gov, the African-American population is 32.4% in Louisiana, 22% in North Carolina, 20.1% in Virginia, and 16.1% in Arkansas. I know we can pickup Arkansas and Virginia with a Clinton/Obama ticket. We just need a good reason for minorities to vote, and Kerry was not the reason. Bill Clinton and Barack Obama are the reason.

Voter Fraud in Ohio

Stefan followed the poll workers who didn't go directly to the election headquarters. Instead, they went to a local public school where workers put the ballot machines into a semi trailer, and then the poll workers handed off the sealed bags containing the ballots to someone Stefan assumed was with the county board of elections.

Corporate Crooks Running Scared

Tue Nov 02, 2004 at 12:45:05 PM PDT

Stock Market Retreats on Exit Polls

U.S. stocks changed course suddenly on Tuesday as chatter on the Internet speculated that early exit polls show Sen. John Kerry leading the presidential election in key states.

Stocks had been sharply higher earlier, but reversed course suddenly just after 1430 EDT, giving up about half those early gains.

The Dow lost about 60 points in 18 minutes.

Traders said that part of the slide was due to Internet blogs indicating that Kerry was ahead in key swing states.

What's that you feel?  No more tax breaks for taking jobs overseas?

Diebold Voting Machines Video - Pass It Around

Fri Oct 29, 2004 at 09:30:25 AM PDT

My wife is from Poland, and her sister in Warsaw sent me a .wmv file that takes a humorous look at Diebold voting machines.

I think it would be beneficial for the general public to see this. Most (if not all) Kossacks know the story behind Diebold. If every American had the same knowledge, there would be a huge backlash against the GOP. In my opinion, humor is the most effective way to initiate conversations in the workplace, and this video does the job.

Cheney Blames Flu Crisis on Lawsuits

Mon Oct 18, 2004 at 01:10:34 PM PDT

Cheney Blames Flu Crisis on Lawsuit Worries

Unbelievable. This election comes down to how gullible Americans are. He's actually quoted as saying the problem with the vaccinne shortage is that it's "not a very profitable business". I've got news for you Dick - profits aren't an excuse for BushCo's failure in providing flu shots to the elderly.

Vice President Dick Cheney on Monday blamed the threat of lawsuits, the yearlong efficacy of flu vaccines and limited company profits for the shortage of the medication.

The Republican also argued that the presidential ticket of Sens. John Kerry and John Edwards -- two Democratic lawyers -- would thwart medical liability reform.

"Given John Edwards' background and John Kerry's voting record, there is not going to be serious medical liability reform as long as the two of them are in business," Cheney said at a campaign stop at a West Virginia restaurant.

During a discussion with local residents, Cheney was questioned by a physician about the limited supply of the flu vaccine. Nationwide, people have lined up at pharmacies and supermarkets for the vaccine since Chiron Corp., which usually provides half the nation's supply, announced it will not supply any this season because of problems at its plant in Britain.

"It's a combination of the economics of the business. They produced millions of doses, but if people don't take it, they have to throw it out," Cheney said. "The other problem is liability concerns."

The vice president also pointed out that manufacturing the flu vaccine has not been a money-maker for drug companies. "The problem we have run into, producing vaccine is not a very profitable business," he said.
