[UPDATED] VA-Sen: DSCC asks George Allen, "Why were you arrested and what are you hiding?"

Sat Oct 28, 2006 at 08:15:16 PM PDT

The gloves are off in Virginia. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) is calling for George Allen to explain
why multiple warrants were issued for his arrest in 1974 while he was a student at the University of Virginia. The court records of his arrests are missing but one of the few official documents detailing the circumstances surrounding his arrests is Allen's application to the Virginia Bar Association.  Allen has so far refused to release that information.

Ah, yes, George's Virginia Bar application - something tells me that's one piece of writing that might make Jim Webb's novels look tame in comparison. Of course, that's assuming he told the truth when he filled out the application...

But back to the DSCC press release:

"Allen's adamant refusal to release documents about his arrest record suggests that there's more to this story and that he's hiding something.  Allen's got a character problem and this stonewalling isn't helping him any," Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesman Phil Singer said.

When news of the arrest warrants resurfaced this month, one of Allen's aides said that one was issued for unpaid parking tickets and another for fishing without a license. The warrants are posted on an index ... but Allen has failed to produce any written documentation verifying his explanation for why the warrants were issued and has not personally addressed the matter.

Shortly after the warrants were issued, Allen applied for membership in the Virginia Bar Association and had to detail his arrest record. Allen could clear up the controversy over his arrest records by simply making the Bar Association documents public.  "Considering all the concerns that have been raised about Allen's character, one would think he'd rush to make official documents detailing his arrest public so that people believe his explanations for why he was arrested," Singer said.

CrellMoset wrote a diary a couple of weeks ago describing his trip to the Albemarle County courthouse, including photographs of the arrest warrant and criminal hearing ledgers with handwritten entry of "George Felix Allen". It's about time someone followed this up.

If George Allen wants us to judge Jim Webb's character based on the actions of some of the characters in his novels, then he should have no problem with letting us judge his character from the facts of his life. You want to make this campaign about character, George? Go right ahead - I've a feeling you haven't a hope of measuring up to Jim Webb.

**UPDATE** Crooks and Liars has a video up of a brief discussion of George Allen's arrest record on Fox News (of all places). So maybe this will seep into the MSM.

And Greg Sargent at the TPM Cafe has a nice rundown of the status of the investigation into Allen's criminal and divorce records.
