Senator Reid: The Time Has Come To Fight

Sun Jan 15, 2006 at 07:54:44 AM PDT

Dear Senator Reid:

I am writing this morning, because the time has come.  The battle that we Democrats have been bracing for, the moment we have been dreading yet yearning for has come, the time has come to fight.

A constitutional crisis looms ahead.  There is another cancer on the presidency.  An arrogant and imperial executive has acted in a way that undermines our tripartite form of government, usurps Congressional power, and threatens the Constitutional rights of all Americans.

We are a nation of freedom.  However, if the court which defines our freedom is yielded to those who believe rights are for corporations, not for citizens, all freedom is lost.

We are a nation of hope.  However, if the last court of appeal is yielded without a fight to those who would deprive Americans of their inalienable rights, all hope is lost.

We are a nation of laws.  However, if the highest court of the land is yielded without a fight to those who would place one man above the law, all law is lost.

The time has come.  A key moment in our nation's history has arrived.  Over two hundred years ago we were given a Republic.  It was paid for in blood.  It is still being paid for in blood today in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It is up to us to keep it.

Democrats must stand and be counted.  It does not matter whether we win the fight to keep Judge Alito off the Supreme Court or not.  What matters is that Democrats, that all patriotic Americans, are willing to put their country before expediency.  That they are willing to speak for those made mute.  That they demonstrate bravery and determination to those who despair that the war for our nation's soul has already been lost.

Please, Senator Reid, be our George Washington.  Lead your troops into battle.  Give us, camped in the darkness of our own Valley Forge, the hope to believe that someday the war to reclaim our nation can be won.
